Peter Winnen: Van Santander naar Santander (238p.)

Peter Winnen is a Dutch former road cycling professional who won the Dutch National Championship (1990), and three stages in the Tour (twice on Alpe d’Huez, the Dutch Alp), and even more importantly also finished 3rd (1983), 4th (1982), and 5th (1981) in the Tour de France overall classification.

Although his prose is a bit rough around the edges (let it be clear: there’s no ghostwriting going on here), it fits the rough world of professional cycling wonderfully well, and to the question whether Winnen is as good a writer as he was a rider, the answer is an emphatic ‘yes’. I’d say I haven’t yet read a better extolment of the immeasurable suffering that is riding the Tour de France.

In Van Santander naar Santander Winnen also admits to the usage of doping, in the pre-EPO era.

Hinault komt steeds meer onder vuur te liggen van de Franse pers. Ze verweten hem al langer saai en berekend rijden, maar nu ook nog eens het geheim houden van een fysieke kwaal. Hij zou op zijn weg zijn naar een Tourzege zonder glans. Vandaag gaf Hinault antwoord. Ten overstaan van een legertje journalisten liet hij tierend zijn broek zakken, draaide zich om en bukte zich. Wat een luxe om zo een zware, hete dag te kunnen afsluiten.
